    Metafields

Metafields are custom data fields in Shopify that extend products, variants, collections and other objects with structured additional information.

Out of the box, Shopify ships fixed product fields: title, description, price, variants. Everything beyond that — material, care instructions, nutrition facts, dimensions, certificates or technical specs — belongs in metafields. Each metafield has a defined type (text, number, file, reference to other products and so on) and can be output precisely in the theme.

The difference from free text in the product description is strategic: metafields are structured data. They power filters, comparison tables, product feeds and structured data for Google, and they map cleanly in ERP or PIM integrations. A store that consistently maintains attributes in metafields stays maintainable through growth and system changes.

In projects, defining a metafield concept early has proven its worth: which attributes exist per product type, which namespaces and types are used, and which system (ERP, PIM or Shopify) owns the values? Cleaning up unstructured free text later is far more expensive than a clean structure from the start.

    FAQ

    Frequently asked questions about Metafields

When does information belong in metafields instead of the description?

Whenever an attribute is recurring and machine-usable: material, dimensions, origin, certificates, technical specs. The description tells and sells; metafields structure.

Can I use metafields without a developer?

Yes. Metafields are defined and maintained in the Shopify admin, and Online Store 2.0 themes can output many metafields without code via dynamic sources. More complex presentations require theme customization.
