PIM (Product Information Management)
A PIM system manages product information centrally in one place and distributes it to all channels: store, marketplaces, catalogs and feeds.
A PIM (product information management) system is the central source for product data: descriptions, attributes, media, translations and channel-specific variants are maintained once and pushed automatically to store, marketplaces and print catalogs. Well-known systems include Akeneo, Plytix and Pimcore.
A PIM pays off once product data gets complex: many products and attributes, multiple languages, multiple sales channels or multiple data suppliers. Without a PIM, product data ends up maintained in parallel across spreadsheets, ERP fields and Shopify — with inconsistencies and heavy manual effort as the result.
In a Shopify context, the PIM typically acts as the leading source for product data while the ERP supplies prices and inventory. Shopify metafields are the target mapping for PIM attributes. For smaller catalogs, Shopify itself plus a clean metafield concept is often enough — a PIM is not an end in itself.
