ERP integration
Shopify JTL-Wawi integration
JTL-Wawi stays the hub.
For retailers who run their operations in JTL-Wawi and want Shopify as the sales channel in front, instead of changing systems again.
When the combination is worth it
JTL-Wawi is widely used in German retail because it bundles warehousing, shipping, marketplaces and documents into one tool. Many retailers start with JTL-Shop and later find that they would rather have Shopify for storefront, checkout and international scaling. The inventory management system is what they want to keep.
The decisive difference to cloud ERPs: JTL-Wawi runs locally on a Windows server with its own database. Shopify cannot reach that server directly. There is therefore always a bridge between the two, a connector or a service that collects data and passes it on. That bridge is a component in its own right with its own operations.
Which objects sync in which direction
JTL-Wawi is leading for everything that touches the warehouse and the documents. Shopify leads on the order and the customer account and hands them over.
| Object | Direction | Leading system | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Products | → Shopify | JTL-Wawi | Products and variants from JTL, often limited to a store-ready part of the range. |
| Inventory | → Shopify | JTL-Wawi | Available quantity after reservation, important when selling on marketplaces in parallel. |
| Prices | → Shopify | JTL-Wawi | Sales prices and customer groups from JTL, promotions run through Shopify. |
| Orders | Shopify → | Shopify | Shopify creates the order, JTL-Wawi collects it for processing. |
| Customers | Shopify → | Shopify | The customer account is created in the store, JTL mirrors it for documents. |
| Fulfillments | → Shopify | JTL-Wawi | Shipping via JTL, tracking back into the Shopify order. |
| Credit notes | → Shopify | JTL-Wawi | Return and credit note in JTL, refund via Shopify. |
Which integration pattern holds up
Connector from the JTL ecosystem
There are connector solutions for Shopify from the JTL ecosystem and from third-party vendors. Which of them holds up depends on your range structure, variants and special logic. Check in advance which objects are covered and how errors become visible.
Custom bridge with a queue
A custom service collects orders from Shopify, puts them into a queue and hands them over to JTL. That decouples the store from the availability of the local server, which is the most important advantage over direct access.
iPaaS for marketplaces and store
When Amazon, eBay or a logistics provider run alongside Shopify, an integration platform gives all channels the same inventory truth. For a pure Shopify setup the effort is usually not justified.
Typical pitfalls
The server is not always reachable
A local machine with updates, restarts and maintenance windows must not slow the store down. Without a queue between the two systems, orders get lost at the least convenient moment.
Variants from another world
JTL variant combinations and Shopify options follow different rules, especially with more than three attributes. This mapping determines the catalog structure and can only be corrected afterwards with redirects.
Inventory across several channels
When the same goods sit on marketplaces and in the store, the reservation logic decides whether you oversell. The store needs the available quantity including open marketplace orders, not the physical stock.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can Shopify access JTL-Wawi directly?
No. JTL-Wawi runs locally with its own database and is not readily reachable from the outside. There is always a bridge between the two: a connector or a custom service that collects the data, buffers it and passes it on to the other side.
Is there a ready-made Shopify connector for JTL?
There are solutions from the JTL ecosystem and from third-party vendors. Which one works for you depends on your variants, the breadth of your range and any special logic. Before deciding, check the scope of objects covered, how errors become visible and who is responsible for updates.
What happens if the JTL server goes down?
The store has to keep selling. That is why a queue belongs in between, buffering orders and pushing them through once the server is back. During that time inventory runs on the last known figures, and safety stock levels cushion the difference.
We are moving from JTL-Shop to Shopify, what stays?
The inventory management system stays unchanged, the store is replaced. What has to be clarified is the URL structure with its redirects, customer accounts, order history and the question of which product data will in future be maintained in the store rather than in JTL-Wawi.
Where do product texts and images belong?
Into the store or into a PIM, not into the inventory management system. JTL supplies structure, prices and stock. As soon as marketing content is overwritten from JTL-Wawi, every change to a text blocks an operational process and translations become laborious.
