Shopify + SAP Integration

SAP integration leaves no room for shortcuts. NICCOS connects Shopify with SAP S/4HANA, SAP ECC and SAP Business One with the governance, security and care that an ERP of this importance requires.

SAP integrations on Shopify, delivered for commerce setups with real requirements across ERP, data quality, inventory, orders and finance.

Which SAP systems can connect to Shopify?

We plan and implement around the SAP landscape: S/4HANA Cloud for larger enterprise setups, classic SAP ECC for companies before migration and SAP Business One for mid-market operations.

SAP remains the system of record for materials, prices, inventory, orders and finance. Shopify provides the commerce experience on top. Before development, we settle the data model, responsibilities, API surfaces and reconciliation.

If you do not use SAP, or need guidance on ERP, PIM, WMS and middleware in general, see the patterns, selection criteria and common pitfalls on our system integration page.

How does a SAP integration with Shopify work technically?

S/4HANA integrations often use SAP OData APIs, frequently through Business Technology Platform with OAuth 2.0. These flows are mapped cleanly to Shopify's Admin GraphQL API, webhooks and operational processes.

Orders, inventory, prices, customers and fulfilment run through controlled, observable flows with transformation, error handling and reconciliation. The integration is designed for SAP's data model rather than attached as an afterthought.

What is particularly critical in a SAP integration?

A storefront error can be corrected. Incorrect inventory, prices, customer data or posting logic in the ERP are far riskier. That is why the data model, responsibilities, monitoring and recoverability are settled before development.

Which data flows between SAP and Shopify, and in which direction?

SAP remains the system of record for everything that ultimately reaches accounting. Shopify owns what originates in the store. For each object, the winning system is defined before a conflict occurs.

    Process

How does a SAP integration work step by step?

    1. 01

      Map the landscape

We identify the SAP edition in use — S/4HANA, ECC or Business One — plus middleware, marketplaces, legacy interfaces and spreadsheets that are effectively part of the process.

    2. 02

      Define data ownership

For every object — material, price, inventory, customer, order and return — we name and document the system of record. This table is the real outcome of the analysis phase.

    3. 03

      Clarify APIs and governance

Only then do we choose the route into SAP: OData APIs, Business Technology Platform or dedicated middleware. Roles, authentication and approvals are aligned with IT and the SAP team.

    4. 04

      Build the flows

Every flow gets a trigger, mapping, validation, idempotency key, error channel and restart path. Development uses test instances, not production.

    5. 05

      Launch in stages

We start with the flow that causes the least damage if it stalls, then work towards orders and finance. SAP and Shopify are reconciled after each step.

    6. 06

      Operate and improve

Monitoring, alerting and regular reconciliation become part of operations, with a documented way to replay an individual divergent record.

    What we need from you

What do you need to provide for a SAP integration?

A SAP integration cannot be built from outside the ERP. These inputs have to come from your organization; without them, interfaces are built against assumptions rather than the real process.

    • A named SAP contact who can make binding decisions about objects, fields and write permissions.
    • Access to an SAP test instance with realistic data volumes, not only production.
    • Approved API surfaces and authentication, agreed with IT and the SAP team rather than built around the ERP.
    • Documented processes for orders, partial deliveries and returns, including real-world exceptions.
    • A written decision about which system owns each data object.
    Fit

Is a SAP integration the right next step?

    The integration makes sense when

SAP is established and has an owner

S/4HANA, ECC or Business One is running in production. What is missing is a reliable connection to the store.

    Data is maintained twice

Inventory, prices or orders are copied manually between systems and discrepancies only surface when customers notice them.

    The processes can be described

Your team can explain orders, partial deliveries and returns, including the exceptions that actually occur in daily operations.

Something else needs to happen first when

    There is no SAP system

The patterns are similar for ERP, PIM, WMS and middleware in general, but the implementation is different.

    System integration

The system of record is still undecided

As long as the system choice remains open, interfaces target a moving model and are paid for again after the decision.

The store platform is about to change

Interfaces built before a migration depend on the legacy data model and IDs and will have to be rebuilt afterwards.

    FAQ

What should you clarify before a SAP integration?

Yes. Shopify and Shopify Plus can connect to SAP S/4HANA, SAP ECC and SAP Business One. The decisive point is to preserve SAP's role as the system of record for master data, prices, inventory, orders and finance.

We plan SAP integrations around the existing landscape: S/4HANA usually through modern API surfaces, SAP ECC through established interfaces and SAP Business One for mid-market setups.

We do not build shortcuts around the ERP. OAuth, API governance, roles, monitoring, error handling and reconciliation are defined together with IT, the SAP team and the commerce team.

A storefront error can usually be corrected. Incorrect inventory, prices, customer data or posting logic in the ERP carry much greater risk. That is why the data model, responsibilities and recoverability are settled before development begins.

SAP remains the system of record for master data, prices, inventory and finance, so those objects flow from SAP to Shopify. Orders, customers and payment information originate in the store. For every object, the winning system is defined before a conflict occurs.
