Consent Management
Consent management is the legally compliant collection, storage and technical enforcement of user consent for cookies and tracking.
Before you can run tracking or marketing technologies in your store, EU law requires user consent. A consent management platform (usually visible as a cookie banner) collects that consent, documents it and controls which scripts are actually allowed to load. Technical enforcement is the crucial part: a banner behind which every tag fires anyway is worthless — and a legal liability.
Relevant for Shopify merchants is Google Consent Mode v2, which since 2024 has been a prerequisite for Google Ads remarketing and conversion measurement in the EU. Google tags are controlled through consent signals rather than blocked outright. Shopify's Customer Privacy API likewise lets you load pixels and apps conditionally on consent.
In practice, consent management is always a trade-off between data quality and legal safety: every user who declines is missing from your marketing data. That makes a cleanly configured setup, server-side tracking where it makes sense, and realistic expectations about data completeness all the more important.
