    Fulfillment

Fulfillment covers everything that happens after the purchase: warehousing, picking, packing, shipping and returns handling.

Fulfillment is the operational side of e-commerce: receiving stock, picking orders, packing, shipping and processing returns. Merchants can handle this themselves (in-house fulfillment) or outsource it to a third-party logistics provider (3PL) that charges per order.

For the customer experience, fulfillment matters at least as much as the store itself: delivery time, shipment tracking and hassle-free returns decide whether customers buy again. In Shopify, fulfillment status is tracked per order and can be synchronized with warehouse management, carriers and ERP systems via apps or APIs.

Beyond a certain volume, it pays to scrutinize fulfillment cost per order: pick-and-pack fees, packaging material, carrier rates and return rates quietly eat into margin otherwise. Merchants selling internationally additionally need a strategy for customs, warehouse locations and local shipping partners.
