Multichannel
Multichannel means selling through several channels in parallel — your own online store, marketplaces like Amazon, social commerce and brick-and-mortar retail.
Multichannel merchants sell wherever their customers are: in their own store, on Amazon and eBay, through Instagram and TikTok, in physical stores. Every channel has its own reach, margin structure and customer expectations. Your own store delivers the best margins and customer data; marketplaces deliver reach and fast revenue.
The operational challenge is synchronization: product data, inventory, prices and orders have to stay consistent across all channels — otherwise you risk overselling and data chaos. Shopify often serves as the central commerce platform, with marketplace connectors, POS and social channels attached via apps or middleware.
Strategically, balance is key: selling only on marketplaces leaves you interchangeable and without a customer relationship. Using marketplaces deliberately as an acquisition channel and moving customers into your own store and retention channels builds lasting brand value.
